Everyone wants to know how far apart they should space their driveway markers. I think the ultimate goal, is to use the fewest amount of snow stakes as possible. The reasons you don’t want to use too many stakes on your property are obvious, to limit the amount of stakes that take away from the landscape aesthetically, and also, for budget purposes, the fewer driveway markers you use, the less money you spend. Whatever you do, do NOT under mark your property!

Both homeowners and commercial snow plow companies should pay close attention to how many stakes they are using and how far apart they are actually placing the stakes. So, you’re asking yourself, how far apart should my driveway markers be? The simple answer is 10-12 feet.

For homeowners, you obviously don’t want your entire yard to be lined with stakes. The main thing to consider is the curvature of the landscape. If the driveways and landscapes are straight, you could probably get away with staking 15-20 feet apart. For curves and expensive stone etc, I would be generous with the stakes to protect any landscapes that you have put work into.

For commercial snow plow guys, it is probably better to be safe than sorry and over stake. The whole point of the marking process is to limit property damage and retain the account year after year. So unless you are dealing with a property manager that is expressing to you that they don’t want that many stakes out on the landscape, then stake away! Plus, there is theft and breakage to consider. Around islands, be generous with stakes around the corners and protect any beds that may be exposed.

So the bottom line is, stake the properties appropriately so all of the landscapes are marked, but you don’t have to make it look like a construction site with orange stakes everywhere either.
