What Is The Difference Between Wood Stakes And Fiberglass Driveway Markers?
Are wood stakes better than fiberglass snow stakes? The difference between wooden stakes and fiberglass driveway markers is significant. When snow plow drivers first needed something to show them where the road ended, they turned to wood survey stakes. These things worked great. Except a couple factors, they’re ugly, and they’re bulky. Being the resilient bunch of guys that snow plow drivers are, they started experimenting with cheaper, lighter and better looking options. Plastic stakes, rebar etc etc. But then, they stumbled on the world famous fiberglass driveway marker.
The most important difference between wood stakes and fiberglass stakes is the install process. Wood stakes are 1 x 1 in size. That means that you will need a wheel barrel on the property to lug around this big clunky stakes. The installer will then have to take out each stake individually and hammer it into the ground. Typically, the installer will prefer to use a sledge hammer for this process. With fiberglass driveway markers, you can easily hold 20-30 stakes in your hand while tapping the stake into the ground with a small rubber mallet. The process of fiberglass stakes is so much simpler and more stream lined than wood stake installation. If putting a small amount of markers into the ground, this isn’t a big deal, but if you have to install 1000+ stakes, this can add a huge amount of time to the whole process.
Another notable factor is the look of each stake on the property. The wooden stakes literally look like something out of a vampire movie. They’re typically splintered, water logged and just an eye sore on a property. Fiberglass stakes are nice and clean, boast vibrant colors but remain understated based on the small diameter. See for yourself in the video and you can be the judge of what looks better. A good comparison is having an old rotten wood deck on your house, or a beautiful clean composite deck, which would you choose?
Lastly is the functionality of the wood stakes and the fiberglass stakes. The wood stakes do not really lock into the ground. Wood stakes are much thicker and loosen the ground around them quite a bit. This makes it much easier for them to simply fall over after some force is applied to them. Fiberglass stakes really lock into the ground nicely and have an awesome flexibility to them while experiencing force from the snow plow trucks and whatever else comes their way. Fiberglass stakes are much more practical and functional.
