1. Make sure the fiberglass material of your snow stakes is high quality – I am going to be honest, you can’t look at fiberglass and distinguish if it is good or bad. You can however decide off reputation. Snow markers can be expensive, so read reviews and go with the most reputable company. Many competitors will have very brittle or even hollow driveway markers.

2. Go hard cap – If the cap on your driveway reflectors isn’t hard, it will break easily and the installation process will be more time consuming and painful. If you get snow stakes with no cap, then when you drive it into the ground, it will fray. No one wants to wear gloves when installing fiberglass markers and more important, no one wants fiberglass fragments in their hands.

3. Can you see the stake at night? – Are the colors fluorescent? Does the driveway marker have reflective tape? Is the reflective surface big enough? These are the questions you need to ask about your snow stake. If all snow plowing was done in the day time, you would’t have to consider this fact.

Well, New England got blasted this past weekend with snow when the Blizzard Nemo arrived. The Boston areas were without power for 2-3 days and most roads are still covered in snow and ice.

Nemo gave Discount Snow Stakes his best shot, but unfortunately for the blizzard, the stakes held up and protected driveways and properties.

When I first saw the above photo, I thought it was over staked. When I thought about it more, it is pretty much perfect. It is difficult to see where the island’s point is once the snow falls, so the contractor put a few extra stakes in to protect it.

This photo shows a vacant building. I think in this case (probably the only case I can think of) wood snow stakes being used is ok. Still though, you need to store these things in the off season and installation is a pain.

From what I’ve noticed, the majority of our customers underestimate the amount of fiberglass stakes that they will need, and with good reason, they want to save money. I get it, contractors don’t know how many snow stakes they’re going to need by eye balling a property, also, you have to wait to get your bids in and contracts accepted, but forecasting properly saves you money, plain and simple. The east coast just got ravaged by Hurricane Sandy and the Noreaster that ripped through  New England last night. In storms like this, it is extremely important to have the little things taken care of. Stocking up on safety supplies and equipment is essential.

I am just like anyone else, I plan on getting ahead and taking care of the little things, but it seems I always end up scrambling to get what I need at the last minute. Make sure you stock up on your supplies early this year, snow stakes and salt spreaders. I have talked to a ton of customers over the past few days that have been scrambling for walk behind salt spreaders. The Icemaster 3000 is one of those items that are much needed during a storm but impossible to find.

Also, I have spoken with many contractors that still have not heard back from properties about their bids. This means that storms that will be coming and the properties won’t be staked. Be prepared and order early. Next day Air service is outrageous with pricing, so being prepared can save you a lot of money.

In most cases this is enough. After the first few snow storms, the plow trucks can use the banks and snow piles as a guide. But in the beginning of the winter season is it enough?

For instance, if a plow driver has an F-250, the height of this truck does not allow the visibility of the 4 foot snow stake the same as it would for a 5 foot snow stakes. The sight line is just too low. 

So for most snow removal contractors, 4 ft stakes will work, but if tight plowing is required and you have higher plow trucks and equipment, 4 ft stakes can be a challenge.

Traditionally, Denver Colorado does a ton of snow staking so now is the time. Also, get your walk behind salt spreaders if you have not already. You don’t want to be stuck salting your properties by hand.

Most of your contracts should be set by now so make sure your properties are marked and that you have all of your equipment ready to go.
